Omarchy Live Wallpaper Setup

Python

A small local web app for managing desktop wallpapers on Omarchy (Arch + Hyprland): import images, GIFs or videos, keep them in a gallery, and flip any of them between a still image and a live, animated wallpaper.

Why it exists

Omarchy draws its wallpaper with a plain QML Image, which only ever shows a GIF's first frame. This app renders everything through mpvpaper instead. It plays a still image just as cheaply, idling at about 0% CPU once painted, and animates video properly.

Built not to crash the shell

Handing the background to mpvpaper means disabling Omarchy's own wallpaper layer, which takes a shell restart. Doing that on every switch hits a known upstream Quickshell bug (a use-after-free during IPC reload) that crashes the whole shell.

So the app disables that layer once, the first time you pick a wallpaper, and never touches it again. Every change after that is just mpvpaper pointed at a different file.

  • Gallery with a live/static switch on every animated file
  • No background service: it opens from the app menu and restores your last wallpaper when it does
  • CLI for scripts and keybinds: list, set, next, prev, live-on, live-off
